We had our first Bonding With Birds volunteer field trip today at Yaquina Head.
Several Pelagic Coromorants have very recently built nests in Trespass Cove,
especially on the east wall.
Brandt's Cormorants are now in FULL courtship mode with their metallic blue
gular pouches fibrillating, and several were "billing" with the beaks open so
they would cross inside and through the open beak of their partner.
More than 50% of the Common Murres colony on Colony Rock seemed to be engaged
in gape displays...flashes of yellow everywhere. Less so on the other rocks. It
does appear that the murres will nest again this year on Lion's Head....and
maybe even on the Southwest Bluff (Gonzo, Cormorant Bluff).
