I visited the Florence area today (Aug. 5).
on the way down and back I saw large numbers of gulls and Brown Pelicans moving north:
Browin Pelican 500+
Heermann's Gull 2000+
California Gull 4000+
At the Dog Pond (South Jetty Road):
Eurasian Collared-Dove 1
American Bittern 1
Red-necked Phalarope 2
South Jetty
Osprey 8+ feeding in very shallow water just south of the south jetty, catching
small fish (~4 inches) looked like possibly juv. surfperch.
Caspian Tern 6 included 1 begging juv. - the first I have seen this summer.
Surfbird 12+ Adults in prebasic molt
Red-necked Phalarope 3 Basic plumage
The channel was remarkably devoid of birds. I saw no alcids here at all, and no ducks.
Only the phalaropes, and some cormorants.
On the way back I stopped at the pull-off just N. of Sea Lion Caves. One Ad. bald eagle was perched on a snag high to the NE, and at least 2 peregrines were flying very high over the ridges to the east.
