OBOL,
If you aren't seeing Black-headed Grosbeaks in your
area, it's because they are all at our house.
Seriously! We must have a couple of dozen in varying
stages. We have 3 tube feeders and several "pavillion"
style feeders. I'm having to refill every night, and
sometimes top off feeders again in the morning. Last
month we went through 100+ lbs. of black oil seed. One
evening this week I was sitting on the patio, and all
I could hear was "crack crack crack" of the seeds as
all the peeps munched. Pretty neat!
We have Scrub Jays too. Quite a few of them, and a few
Stellar Jays too! That's a neat treat.
This morning there was a Cooper's Hawk on the ground
under the tube feeder in the front yard. I looked for
feathers but didn't see any. I don't know if he got
breakfast or not...
We also have a young Red-tailed Hawk in the area. It
will come through the area and be promptly chased off
by the crows.
Another completely fascinating new "BY" bird for us is
the Bald Eagle. Wow! Several mornings now I have been
*really* late for work because I can't stop watching
it! I think it's the male from the Skinner's Butte
pair. It sits on a big snag at the Merry Lane duck
ponds and vocalizes quite early in the morning. One
day last week it got into a knock down drag out with
an Osprey over a fish. I had to go to work and didn't
see the outcome.
We also have, in no particular order:
Cedar Waxwings
Flickers
Robins
Bushtits
Chickadees - just BC right now
Anna's Hummingbirds
Song Sparrows
Fox Sparrows
Red-breasted Nuthatch
Hairy WP
Downy WP
House Finches
Am. Gold Finches
I'm sure there's more, but I'm drawing a blank now...
Happy Birding!
