The Oregon dragonfly group had its annual field weekend August 23-27.
While at Scout Lake (Santiam Pass, Jefferson Co.) on 8-25, we had a
Black-backed Woodpecker and a family of Townsend's Solitaires in camp.
On 8-27, we had a flock of Pinyon Jays at the Ranger Station feeder on
the west side of Sisters. And at Camper Lake (McKenzie Pass, Lane Co.)
we had Crimson-ringed Whiteface (Leucorrhinia glacialis) on 8-27 for a
new Oregon late date record for this little black and red dragonfly.
At Cold Springs Campground (Deschutes Co). on 8-27, we watched a dozen
bird species bathing in the creek, including one nice Nashville Warbler.

But the biggest thrill was a call today from my five-year old grandson,
Benjamin. He was at Skinner Butte Park in Eugene with his preschool
mates and they spotted an Osprey over the Willamette River. Then Ben
pointed out an adult Bald Eagle flying overhead. For a birding
grandfather, it doesn't get much better than that. Steve Gordon
