Eric Henze and I conducted the Heppner Raptor Survey yesterday (11/30/07)
with very good results. I can send details to anyone who is interested. In
addition to raptors, we found a flock of 150 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in Heppner.
The birds were in the small park with public restrooms on Highway 74 just as
you enter town from the south. We also found a flock of 200+ GRAY-CROWNED
ROSY-FINCHES. They were on Sanford Canyon Road about 4.5 miles northwest of
its junction with Balm Fork Road (DeLorme p. 85 D6). These were both firsts
for us in Morrow County. There was a BARN OWL in a barn near Lexington
(easily observed from the road) and juncos and crowned sparrows were
swarming everywhere along the route. We might have been able to find
something interesting if we’d had time to scrutinize them.
Good birding,
