Thank you for telling us. That garden in the photos was full of interesting
plants that he and Mary grew, and many of them were lilies. Bill was
important to the Pacific Northwest Lily Society. We had national meetings
and small gatherings there and a tour of the garden was the highlight at all
times of year. Bill's quiet was punctuated with sharp humor and considered
opinion. There are many more who will miss him.

Portland Birders Night and our Oregon birding community has lost a friend.
Bill Hoffman, a long-time birder and photographer, passed away on November
26, 2007.

We could always count on Bill to bring a selection of recent slides to
Birders Night. Many times the photos were of ordinary birds in his
backyard....made beautiful by the flowers they were captured near. Bill had
a little trick of concealing a bit of birdseed near the blossoms to attract
the chickadees, song sparrows and towhees to whatever was in bloom, many
time capturing the birds in flight as they landed or flew away. And his
flowers were often spectacular, stealing the show from the birds in the
photos!

Bill also brought photos from his travels around the state, Ridgefield NWR
in SW Washington or from pelagic trips. He had a knack for capturing birds
in flight, occasionally drawing applause from the rest of us for a really
great photo.

We will miss his quiet presence and his generosity in sharing his great
photos.
