Today, 12-05-07, the North Grants Pass Raptor count was accomplished.
Time: 3 hrs, 15 mins; miles driven: 38.1; weather: low- to mostly mid-level fog and overcast conditions.
Species observed:
Red-tailed Hawk - 12
American Kestrel - 8
Red-shouldered Hawk - 6
White-tailed Kite - 6
Not much raptor variety today, but hopefully, will improve on the next round of counts. The weather to date has not been all that bad in the Rogue Valley, plus the Robins/Waxwings are just starting to show up in numbers. They should be followed by their arch enemies - Cooper's Hawks and Merlins.
Some standing water in fields has attracted Ducks, BG Herons, Egrets, Geese, so on, but nothing unusual seen, yet at least.
To Jeff - Surprise! There appears to be lots of Kites and Red-shouldered Hawks along the North route for sure (most in the Lower River Rd area). Not included in the Kite tally was one bird way south of the river (in the South GP route, actually). No doubt it was a Kite (white bird hovering in the air); it's pretty amassing how far away you can see these birds (at least 2 miles from me).
