Dear OBOL and COBOL readers, AND Mike Patterson, too,
Mike, THANKS for the directions to the Loon. They worked out just
FINE! NOW, for those going there Wednesday and beyond----DON'T try to
get there on Highway 30!!!!!!! It is CLOSED! I got through at about
7:30 AM on Tuesday and was sitting in the Berry Patch Resterant on my
way BACK when the news came that Hwy 30 was being closed at 10AM. That
and the news that Hwy 4 in Washington was ALSO closed meant that I had
to back-track though Astoria and come back over the mountains on Hwy
26. WOW!!! What decimation!! Sure glad we live at Crooked River
Ranch. I went to Blind Slough by way of Gnat Creek road which branches
off Hwy 30 to the north, Go straight at the first intersection and park
near the boat ramp on the right. The bird can be seen there OR you can
continue a bit farther and take a right over the bridge on Brownsmead
Rd. Check on the bridge to see if you can see the bird back south
around a point of land that you just passed. I was lucky enough to see
not only the Arctic, but also Pacific AND Common Loons in the same frame.
UNLUCKY for me my camera's lens didn't seem to be working and ALL of my
photos wer out of focus! DANG!
