Despite dreary weather following several weeks of cold, the Bend Christmas Bird Count produced its second best results ever. A total of 96 species was recorded with another six being seen during count week. New species for the count were SAVANNAH SPARROW, EURASIAN COLLARED DOVE and BARN OWL. Other rare-for-the-count birds were WILD TURKEY, NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL and BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER. High numbers were recorded for LESSER SCAUP, BUFFLEHEAD, RUDDY DUCK and HAIRY WOODPECKER. Biggest misses were RED CROSSBILL, AMERICAN CROW and GREAT HORNED OWL.

The most unusual bird seen on the count was an adult male MANDARIN DUCK (not counted as it is obviously an escape from somewhere). I have never seen one in the wild before and none has ever been reported from anywhere in Central Oregon. The bird was free-flying with Wood Ducks. Does anyone know the status of the birds in Stanley Park, BC, where there is (at least used to be) a small population.
