I think this is of sufficient general interest to be worth posting.

Rare Birds of California is one of the finest books on birds I have ever
seen. It has to do with vagrants, so if you are not into vagrants it is not
for you BUT it also has a lot of superb photos and great bird sketches.

> Dear Board and Friends:
>
> It has just come to our attention that orders for Rare Birds of California,
> since late November, were being directed into the "ether" and were not
> reaching any destination. Many were returned to the sender as undeliverable.
> This was because of a communication breakdown with the website server that
> occurred while our webmaster was out of town and was beyond our control. The
> problem was only discovered after I began returning phone call inquiries and
> realized that there were no order forms submitted to
> rarebirdsofcalifornia at yahoo.com to back up the information being received in
> telephone messages.
>
> As of today, Wednesday, I have personally contacted every inconvenienced
> person who called in to my phone number, and have given them alternative
> ordering information. If you are receiving phone calls or emails from people
> questioning what has happened to their Rare Birds order please tell them to
> contact Allen Press directly at 800-627-0326, ex. 230, or to forward their
> order by email directly to rarebirdsofcalifornia at yahoo.com, bypassing the
> website. The website link will be up and working again by tonight, hopefully,
> but those people hoping for Christmas delivery will need to call Allen NOW.
>
> Allen Press is now taking care of shipping all books and no more books will be
> shipped from California. We had left the website referral for ordering and
> rarebirdsofcalifornia at yahoo.com open in order to have a control for
> bookkeeping purposes that allowed us a mechanism to track who was ordering.
>
> For the orders in question, we can deal with shipping upgrades on a
> case-by-case basis, but only for those people who ordered early in December.
> Those who waited to order until a week before Christmas are out of luck.
> Those who called in at the beginning of December and left messages have been
> offered a mailing upgrade.
>
>
> Thanks, everyone, for your understanding and help in this matter. The events
> are unfortunate, to be sure, but we are doing our best to get them resolved
> quickly and completely.
>
> Merry Christmas!
