Today, my wife and I did some birding in Clark County. At the
Ridgefield NWR, River "S" Unit we ran in to the usual suspects including
Bill Clemons and Al Larrabee and good numbers of birds. We enjoyed
looking over the many color morphs of RED-TAILED HAWKS including Harlan's
and some gorgeous reddish intermediate birds. Several ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS
were working the fields past Rest Lake along with Red-tailed and NORTHERN
HARRIERS. Among the couple of hundred TUNDRA SWANS visible from the
Observation Blind was a family of and TRUMPETER SWANS with four
juveniles. About a dozen GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE and fourteen
SANDHILL CRANES were on the west end of Rest Lake.
On our way back home we swung by the Vancouver Lake Lowlands and
found two RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS at the Flushing Channel on Vancouver
Lake. From there in dwindling light we drove north past the County Park
and spotted a juvenile RED-SHOULDERED HAWK along the slough just north of
the park.
