OBOL,

We did a feeder/yard watch for our CBC. The weather
was pretty awful, so the count wasn't as good as it's
been in the past. It was cold, wet, windy and there
was a heck of a hail/snow storm about 3:30 p.m. Also,
first off in the morning a Cooper came through. Later,
the Merlin did a swoop through and everyone split...

These numbers are from our1/4 acre yard at the end of
Arbor, on the Willamette River.

Listed from most to least:

140 Cackling Goose (yes, we are counting flyovers!)
60 Bushtit
46 Dark-eyed Junco
34 Canada Goose
24 House Finch
18 American Crow
12 American Robin
8 Black-capped Chickadee
7 Starling (bah humbug!)
6 Scrub Jay
6 Song Sparrow
6 Lesser Goldfinch
5 Gull (sp?)
4 Wood Duck
4 Downy Woodpecker
4 Northern Flicker
4 Mountain Chickadee (been here since mid October)
4 Fox Sparrow
3 Mallard
3 Double Crested Cormorant
3 Anna's Hummingbird
2 Red-breasted Nuthatch
2 White-breasted Nuthatch
2 Yellow-rumped Warbler
2 Spotted Towhee
2 Gold-crowned Sparrow
2 House Sparrow
1 Cooper's Hawk
1 Merlin (been making regular swoops through for a few
weeks)
1 Bald Eagle
1 Mourning Dove
1 Belted Kingfisher
1 Townsend's Warbler

Also, does anyone out there "play" the first bird of
the New Year game? We were introduced to it a few
years ago. The first bird you see tomorrow is the one
you study and learn about for the year. Since we've
been doing it, I've only closed my eyes once, so I
didn't have a starling for the first bird of the
year...

Happy New Year!
