I bought a Nikon D50 SLR last spring which came with a
20-80mm telephoto. Great for flowers, butterflies and
pictures of the kid, frustrating for birds.

So, this year I ordered a 70-300 f4-f5.6G Nikon lens which
all the really good photographer will tell you is not even
remotely as good as buying a dedicated, high-end 300mm lens.
But cost is an issue, so I did the best I could inside my
budget.

I spent the morning field testing my new camera lens to see
what its limits were, what the difference between hand held
vs tripod stabilized are, etc. Here are some selected results
(cropped and resized to be placed on a server with limited space).

Not surprisingly, the closer you get to a subject the better
the product. And I do not expect National Geographic will
be banging on my door with job offers, but I'm happy generally
happy with the results.
