I spent a few hours birding in the nice weather at Sauvie Island
today (Friday, Feb 2). While waiting for the Black Phoebe at the
"OM Slough" on Gillihan Loop Rd just before the intersection with
Reeder Rd, a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW showed up. Then, all of a
sudden, up pops the... er, no wait... that's a SLATE-COLORED JUNCO!
(Pretty funny when you think about it. Nice try, Mother Nature,
but you didn't fool me this time.) Three more WHITE-THROATED
SPARROWS were on the other side of the road. A SHARP-SHINNED
HAWK was perched in a tree nearby.
I drove up to where the slough crosses Reeder Rd, and watched a
Raccoon poking around in the trash while a River Otter swam in the
water. The first of either mammal (alive, anyway) that I've seen
on the Island. While checking the slough a COOPER'S HAWK flew over.
BALD EAGLES, RED-TAILED HAWKS, and NORTHERN HARRIERS were all over
the place. Should be a great show for tomorrow's Sauvie Island
Raptor Road Trip!
Never did see the phoebe, but it was a great day to be out there.
