Hi Folks,
Friday morning on my way out to bird, I was greeted at the gas
station with "Did you hear the news? Did you hear the good news?"
When I replied that I hadn't , the attendant gushed, "The groundhog
didn't see his shadow! We're going to have an early spring!" Good
news, indeed.
I headed off to do a little birding other than raptor surveys--every
once in while you have to look at the other ones, too. I headed out
Old Fort Rd. north to Algoma Rd. and on to Haglestein Park.
Highlights of the day: WHITE-HEADED WOODEPCKER on Hunter's Ridge Rd.
along with a DOWNY WOODPECKER, and PYGMY NUTHATCH. TOWNSEND'S
SOLITAIRE, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, and 12 RED CROSSBILLS were found in
different areas along Old Fort Rd.
I spotted 3 BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS in a large flock of Starlings, Red-
winged Blackbirds, and Brewer's Blackbirds.
I spent two years in K-Falls before I spotted an American Dipper last
November in Collier State Park where I had looked many times. Friday
I saw 2 AMERICAN DIPPERS in Haglestein Park. A VARIED THRUSH (male)
worked the edge of the pond and a couple of PINE SISKIN cavorted with
LESSER GOLDFINCH. 3 female HOODED MERGANSERS, some LESSER SCAUP and
COMMON GOLDENEYE AND BUFFLEHEAD swam in the canal beside the park.
It was a gorgeous day here in the Basin--warm for January and lots of
sun.
Good birding y'all,
Julie Van Moorhem
