Speed Bumps...

I've been trying to think of a solution to the speeding problem at the South
Jetty in Newport. I agree with Lars that local law enforcement is stretched way
too thin to expect them to be able to handle the problem effectively,
especially with all the erroneous calls they get these days (another major
gripe of mine).

As Lars pointed out, there are numerous pot holes on that road. However, these
are concentrated at the end of the road, starting about where the back dunes
begin. The road is actually pretty smooth sailing for most of its length.

So, my idea is to strategically place speed bumps along that road, including at
both ends of the "gull puddle" and then others spaced in such as way as to
never allow a motorist to pick up speed without serious damage to their
vehicle. This could be coupled with press releases explaining why they are
being added.

I personally hate these things in parking lots but I'm willing to put up with
them for the sake of the birds and also the safety of the many people who walk
that road.

If any of you can provide me with specific examples of where speed bumps have
been helpful, I could pass these along to various people I will be pitching
this idea to.

I would also like to see a small patch of the "gull puddle" somehow chained off
from vehicles to give the gulls at least one safe spot...but I know this will
be a harder sell.
