Debby de Carlo and I went birding today in rainy SW
Washington.
West of Vancouver at Vancouver Lake Park (in the
parking lot shrub/tree areas near the entrance) we saw
a pair of RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKERS and a few
WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS (both white striped and tan
striped forms).
At Ridgefield NWR River "S" Unit we saw a juvenile
NORTHERN SHRIKE on two different little white boundary
signposts at the SE corner of Rest Lake. We also
watched it hover as it hunted Kestrel-like.
The HARLAN'S RED-TAILED HAWK is still hanging around,
usually in a large Oak on the dike at the E boundary E
of Rest Lake about 200 yds S of where the road turns N
toward the exit/entrance booth. It has been there for
months now.
Near the start of the loop we saw a Coyote (female)
that almost caught a Nutria, making contact and
missing so close she seemingly must have had fur in
her teeth.
