On Sunday Dec. 31, a Townsend's warbler showed up for a quick flash of yellow in my scrubby backyard in East St John's, in north Portland. It was part of a mixed flock of mainly juncoes, with a couple ruby-crowned kinglets. A half-hour later, a small flock of bushtits arrived, supervised by a passing northern flicker. All the while, a scrub jay was calling the play by play from across the street.
