Sounds to me like they were smoking dried lichens (or something.)

Subject: [obol] 'funny' common names
Hi all,
In the spirit of the conversation about the double-entendre common bird
names, here's a few common names of lichens of the Northwest. I swear that
a bunch of drunk lichenologists sat around the campfire one evening and made
these up!
Sea tar
Bark barnacle
Seaside kidney
Punctured rock-tripe
Peppered moon
Lettuce lung
Frog pelt
Freckle pelt
Pimpled kidney
Forking bone
Laundered rag
Antlered perfume
Devil's matchstick
Waterworm
Coastal reindeer
Common Christmas-tree
Blood spattered beard
Common witch's hair
and my favorite:
Questionable rock-frog
(These are all from the Plants of the Pacific Northwest Coast, Pojar and
MacKinnon)
