Hi All,

It is really, really difficult to lead a field trip to
look at nonvascular plant species (lichens,
bryophytes, and mushrooms) with beginners because most
of them do NOT have anything but scientific names.
So, you have to make up names or look hard to find
"common" names. Fortunately there actually are a few
common names, although Kyle failed to mention one my
favorites- a crustose species that is green and grows
in patches on old logs with pink apothecia spread
throughout it (the part of the lichen that produces
spores)- it is called "Fairy Barf". You gotta love
that name, especially if you've seen it in the woods!

Happy botanizing,
