areas") are common....and as Lars pointed out this is NOT a freeway or a
highway where roadkills are often completely unavoidable by motorists. This is
a "road" where motorists should be going very slow and on the constant look-out
for people and wildlife in the road. I think at minimum we need some pedestrian
and wildlife crossing signs....and the speed limit should be posted more than
at the entrance to the road.
I have personally only seen one law enforcement officer on that road
ever....and he was speeding (FAST).
I would guess that more than 95% of all motorists that come through there
speed, more than half probably go 3x or more the posted speed limit. This
includes some well known birders who should know better....you know who you
are.
Gulls and other birds are very often on this road....much more than in a
typical road.
I often see the gulls enticed into the road and/or very close to the road with
food....and they tend to linger there for while afterwards. Most cars do see
them in advance and slow down to allow the birds to fly/walk out of the way.
However, I also see motorists who intentionally drive through the densest part
of the gull flock and in fact some of them seem to get a thrill by speeding up.
It is a very popular place around sunset when motorists have more trouble
seeing.
Families with small children often walk that road...these children often dart
into the road and I have seen near misses.
Pedestrians often switch back and forth across the road to look at wildlife,
boats, the lighthouses, etc...this is a park setting.
Many people walk their dogs there and these dogs often dart into the road.
Bicyclists often cycle this road and I've seen near misses.
This is a popular road for skateboards, skates, passing the frisbee back and
forth, etc...I've seen children roll out/jump out in front of cars.
It is a very popular fishing area with people often in the road as they load
and unload their equipment.
Many senior citizens walk this road and some of them do not react as quickly as
younger people.
I have known for a long while that there are serious safety concerns on this
road both for people and for wildlife. I predicted I would eventually see what
I saw Saturday. I think we should make an effort to do something about this
issue before something even more serious occurs.
