This Sunday a friend and I spent a lovely couple of hours birding the area
off the end of Royal Ave. at Fern Ridge. I hadn't expected much since it
was mid-day, kind of dry and a bit warm. Surprisingly, there was still much
to see, including an adult Black Tern in full breeding plumage. We had
stopped at the observation platform and then walked south along the dike
which takes one on a loop around the south end of the marshes. About
halfway along that leg of the loop my friend, who is not an experienced
birder, noticed an unusual bird and guessed it might be a tern. After
consulting our books, it was clearly a Black Tern. Other birds of note were
four White Pelicans, several Bullock's Orioles including young, flying Am.
Bitterns, several Yellowlegs (wasn't sure if they were greater or lesser),
two Willets, and other shorebirds including Killdeer and possible Dunlin.
For a day in which we hadn't expected a lot, it turned out to be very
productive.
