Dear Dave,
This is the section I wrote for the Whimbrel account found in the
book Birds of Oregon, A General Reference on p. 224: "Inland sightings have
generally been of individual birds, but flocks of up to 15 have been
reported (Gilligan et al. 1994) and one flock of 24 was near Malheur NWR HQ
on 20 May 1989 Anderson 1989c)." It would appear that the Whimbrel flock
you saw on May 12 was the approximately the third largest ever found in
eastern Oregon. I am not sure where or when the flock of 15 was found that
is referred to in Jeff Gilligan's book Birds of Oregon Status and
Distribution.
Sincerely,
Tim Janzen

Subject: [obol] RFI: Largest ever flock of Whimbrel e. of the Cascades?

Greetings All,

While doing a Big Day in Klamath Co. May 12, 2007, Kevin Spencer, Dave
Haupt, Frank Mayer and I encountered a flock of 14 Whimbrel just south of
Merrill s.e. of Klamath Falls. Kevin is reasonably confident this is the
largest flock ever found in Klamath Co. I am wondering if anyone knows of a

larger flock anywhere e. of the Cascades?

Thanks,

Dave
