My husband and I spent July 3 and 4 at a beautiful new park in Linn Co. on the Santiam R., River Bend. Plenty of lush vegetation meant a good number of shrub-loving birds, with a particular standout being a gorgeous male MCGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER, who sang twice in full view from the top of a tree near what must have been his nest-site. We observed CEDAR WAXWINGS carrying nesting materials, heard OLIVE-SIDED AND WILLOW FLYCATCHERS all around the area, and saw and heard PILEATED WOODPECKERS and RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKERS and HAIRY WOODPECKERS. On the river were SPOTTED SANDPIPERS as well as two sets of COMMON MERGANSER families, one with three almost grown young, the other with five fairly small ducklings. SWAINSON'S THRUSHES serenaded us constantly, until after dark in one case. Also in good numbers were BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLERS, SONG SPARROWS, and AMERICAN ROBINS. Two OSPREYS perched on snags over the river. It's a very nice spot, and worth stopping in if you need a break
coming or going on Highway 20. It's east of Sweet Home a few miles, not far from Cascadia State Park, on the same side of the highway.
Happy birding, all. . .
