Alan's mention of a Cassin's Vireo in
his neighborhood coincides with my detection
of two in mine the past week. I used to think
they were a summer resident here in my woods.
But after subscribing to Obol I realized all
the detections since I moved here(1993) were
in mid-May and probably involved migrants.
Then about July 1 I heard one singing in
tall Douglas-firs at the jct of Hayward and
Gheen Rds.. This is what I would consider
appropriate breeding habitat. Yesterday morning
(Sat,7/7) a Cassin's Vireo was singing in
heavy riparian growth across Hwy 26 in downtown
Manning at 6am. I have never noted them there
before. I am at this location every Saturday
morning (when there is no traffic noise) and
expect I would have heard the bird some previous
weekend if it was maintaining a territory.
