Obolers,

I had the pleasure of spending Friday and Saturday nights at the new park.
While most of my time was spent with family (my wife's uncle is on the park
and rec commission) I was able to search out some birds.

I was told by a camp host that there is one Pileated Woodpecker nest near
the front entrance and one possible nest by the horse camp. I saw one P.
Woodpecker near the horse camp but did not see where it went. He also said a
Downy Woodpecker had been seen in the park.

I saw one Red-Breasted Sapsucker, 9 Band-tailed Pigeons, a family of 4
Chestnut-backed Chickadees, 2 Black-headed Grosbeaks, numerous Juncos, and a
Ruby Crowned Kinglet. American Robins were everywhere and two Hummingbirds
(I assume Rufus) were seen.

On the day of the dedication there was a short nature walk and the leader
said he had seen nesting activity by MacGillivray's Warbler and Wilson's
Warbler. In the heat of the day neither bird showed. These two are on the
trail from the visitors' center to the hike in tent camp approx. 100 to 150
yds. down the trail on the right.

This campground has by far the largest camp sites we have ever experienced.
I believe every site is ADA approved. At this time only one camp loop is
complete (55 spaces) and the day use is open. Horse people have their own
day use area and camping with each site having their own corral. The cabins
have the best view of the coast range available in the park. This area was
a tree farm (Longview Fibre) so the trails are refurbished logging roads. I
understand the aerial photos have been added to the web page for Stubb
Stewart state Park. http://www.oregon.gov/OPRD/PARKS/STEWART/index.shtml .
The landscape is still raw but will fill in in time. I think this park is a
continuation of the standard set by Oregon's parks that we all know and
love.
