Yep, I expect there have been many alders that were overlooked or brushed under the carpet in Oregon because the bird were silent or because it's just hard to be certain of the ID if you haven't have a lot of experience with 'em (not to mention next to impossible to convince records committees of an ID without recordings). The first alders I ever heard were singing right next to willows and I was only able to distinguish them when an experienced birder pointed out the difference to me.

Randy, Doug, et al,
If that was an Alder Flycatcher, then there was a singing bird at Thornton Creek, Lincoln County in late May or early June a few years back. I don't have the date. But the calling bird here sounded exactly like the one recorded by Randy. I thought at the time it was likely an Alder Flycatcher, because the call was distinct from Willow, with which I am very familiar, but having only a subjective written description of the voice ( fee-be-o) I wasn't confident to make the call. Having now heard a recording, I am certain it exactly matches what I heard. One of the things that seems to me distinctive is that the Alder song sounds like it starts with a rolling "r" sound, rather than the explosive "f" in the "fitz" of the Willow. So we are back to subjective voice descriptions, but the sound itself is certainly different.
