Obolers,
I visited the refuge this morning in hopes of seeing
the Indigo Bunting. I arrived at the viewing site
along the trail at 9 AM and did not see or hear the
bird. After a thorough search of the oaks in the
area, around 9:15 the bird started singing. After a
painstaking search (which included hiking downslope
from the trail and completely circling the tree) of
one of the single oaks just north of the preferred
snag mentioned in previous OBOL postings, I finally
found the bird at the tippy top of the tree nestled
amongst some leaves. I am glad that it kept singing
while I was looking for it! Very nice bird sporting a
color blue not normal to Oregon :) It would have been
nice to have a male Lazuli Bunting nearby for
comparison but no such luck. The bird abruptly
stopped singing shortly before 10 AM when I left the
area.
As is often the case with my efforts to chase down
rare birds, I somehow always manage to see something
different besides the intended target. Today, as I
was traveling north on Highway 99 from Albany, a
WEASEL scurried across the highway right in front of
me a few miles south of Monmouth. Its tail was
straight up and it had a plump vole or mouse firmly
grasped in its mouth. It has been a long time since I
last saw or for that matter even thought about
weasels. Nice serendipitous experience :)
