For those of you who don't know, Del Norte Cty has had some amazing
birds including a recent BLACK SKIMMER. Now Humboldt had a FRIGATEBIRD
last night.

This evening Peter Ralph spotted and ID'd a Frigatebird coming south
along the beach at the Lanphere Dunes. It circled around and headed
back to the north turning back south again at the Mad River mouth. It
then worked south along the eastern side of the dune forest, perched
briefly, took flight again, and finally landed in a tall pine tree where
it sat for about 20 minutes and was extensively photographed. It was
seen by Peter and C.J. Ralph, Brian L. Sullivan, Marshall J. Iliff, and
Steve Kelling; photos were taken by Brian (flight) and Marshall
(perched). Unfortunately the bird took flight again about 45-60 min
before dusk and flew south along the beach. We think there is a good
chance it perched in the area again, and for those interested in trying
to see it tomorrow morning might be a good bet to scan for soaring
frigates in the area.
Identification of this bird is going to be difficult. Probability may
favor Magnificent, which has an apparent pattern of vagrancy starting in
late June and July, but other frigatebirds will need to be eliminated.
It is a subadult, with a largely white head and breast, but with
significant black on the nape. The black nape extended along the lower
sides of the head to form a half collar and a fainter black collar
appeared to extend under the throat. The eyering was pinkish and most
apparent in front of the eye. The belly patch was rounded at the lower
border but was cleft centrally with black. A small patch of cinnamon
color was apparent on the central lower throat. Black in the throat
appears to rule out a female Great Frigatebird, but the cinnamon color
is intriguing in that cinnamon on the white heads are not typical of
Magnificent.
Plumage variation in frigatebirds, especially subadults, is not
well-covered in most guides, and we are still waiting to check Howell's
detailed frigatebird article in Birding magazine -- that may provide
some answers tomorrow.
