OBOL,
This afternoon (Monday, July 16), a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD flew across the
road right in front of me in the Moolack Beach area, just north of Newport.
Got great looks at the white wing patches. The bird flew from west to east
across Highway 101, at a point somewhere between 1.5 and 2.0 miles south of
Beverly Beach State Park, flying into a stand of shore pines on the east
side of the highway.
This morning in the cove at the north base of Yaquina Head, a large raft of
birds near the beach included the following:
1 RED-NECKED GREBE (is it early in the season to expect this species?)
6 WESTERN GREBES
2 PACIFIC LOONS
~300 SURF SCOTERS
We spent the weekend at a house perched above Agate Beach (just south of
Yaquina Head), but didn't have many opportunities visit birdy areas away
from the open beach. Yesterday (Sunday), on Agate Beach we saw about 50
WESTERN SANDPIPERS and one WHIMBREL.
