[obol] Black-backed Lesser Goldfinch

obol:

I was only mildly looking at this thread. I don't keep close track of such
things. I figure birds are variable, like people. I know I've seen a
black-backed Lesser Goldfinch somewhere in my ramblings around Oregon.

However, this evening, when I arrived at Fernhill Wetlands and parked at the
NW corner of the big lake, there were two very active, VERY-BLACK-BACKED
LESSER GOLDFINCHES in the weeds right in front of my car. The crown,
scapulars, and wings were coal black. The nape was very dark green.

Good birding,

I have only seen one in OR with a blackish back and that, also, was near
Frenchglen- around the same time as Alan's sighting, so possibly the same
bird.

I have seen a blackish one in the valley once, maybe 30 years ago, and once
at Frenchglen in fall, maybe 8 years back or so.
