That's quite possible.  Whatever the reason, it probably isn't a coincidence that so many darker-backed LEGOs have been reported here recently.  Since my initial report, I've seen a couple more males at my feeders with a lot more black mixed in with the olive on their backs.

I wonder if this apparent incursion of black-backed Lesser Goldfinches is a
product of the long-term drought in the form's normal range.
