Like Tom Love, I look back fondly at Roslyn Lake.  Its destruction will mean the lost of a rest stop for thousands of migratory birds and a home to hundreds of animals.  On a human level there will be the loss of a fine family site.  I have fond memories of my three small children, all grown now, swimming and playing on the beach at the lake on hot summer afternoons.  I have made at least one trip a month to the lake since last year just to savor the beauty of the changing seasons reflected off its water for the final time.

  Recent news that PGE has begun demolition of Marmot and Little Sandy Dams southeast of Portland, with associated waterworks and pump station, to restore salmon habitat brought me pause.  While I'm all for this, I was reminded how our actions always have some consequence, and even something as unalloyed as this nevertheless brings change.  It was at Roslyn Lake, the artificial holding pond for the old electricity generating station there, that I found a HEERMANN'S GULL one fall, along with a number of waterfowl species for my Clackamas county list.  Open water is a rare habitat in Clackamas (as well as Yamhill, where I mostly bird) County.  It was also there that I first met Steve Dowlan after a year or more of email correspondence.
