Just now today (06-01-07), outside our window (just east of Merlin I-5 exit, Josephine Co) there still is a perched male COSTA'S HUMMINGBIRD. A typical male pretty much like Sibley's illustration. Somewhat "dull" looking due to molt most likely. Has a wide white "arch" above the eye, white behind the gorget (which is purplish and long, well into the shoulder), breast has a "vest" appearance, downward curved bill, wings about equal to tail length at rest. ...and while attempting to preen its breast with its bill, it looked like it had two swords sticking out behind it (the long gorget extension).
Could have been around before but just didn't notice it.
Dennis (north of Grants Pass)
