Yesterday, (Friday 06/01/07) Sylvia Maulding and I took a half day
trip up the Willamette Pass area to check out some year birds. At
Salt Creek Falls we had 6 BLACK SWIFTS above the ridges to the west
at 7:20 am. The Little Deschutes River crossing at Hwy 97 had a
NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH singing from the top of a snag. No CATBIRD
response at that location.
At Davis Lake we had a family of BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS working
the area at the intersection of Rd 850 and the old Lava Bed
Campground Rd. We had two adults, male and female, and one juvenile
male with one unknown in a nest. The nest is located about 100 yds
south of the intersection on the east side about 7 feet off the
ground and only 20-30 feet from the road. Also found were a pair of
HAIRY WOODPECKERS, MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS, HOUSE WREN, WESTERN TANAGER,
OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER etc.
The road into Gold Lake is now open and available. The road into
Waldo Lake is still blocked by snow approximately 4 miles from Hwy 58.
