Flickers have always eaten some of the millet I put out on the ground.

Subject: [obol] Flicker eating seeds
For a number of years we have had flickers coming to our suet feeder in Tigard and then going to the feeder we fill with sunflower chips. In the summer we had no suet but the flickers would come to our tube feeder of sunflower chips. They had such trouble perching on the tube feeder that I took a piece of hardware cloth (with quarter inch holes) and wrapped around the bottom of the feeder. I held it in place by passing the bottom perch through the hardware cloth. I made it long enough for them to perch and reach the bottom feeder port and have it as a support for their tails as well. They figured it out immediately and when they come to feed on our (bug free) sunflower chips it is much less awkward.
