Nothing rare to report from last evening's walk. Several pairs of Cinnamon
Teal, a Pied-bill Grebe, Wood Ducks with ducklings, Marsh Wrens singing
within feet of us, mallards, great blues and redwings. This was at the
small marshes seen from the Crown Zellerbach Trail on the Scappoose
bottomlands. Was surprised by one Great Egret that landed. The Bittern
finally started to "call" just as we were leaving at dusk. Never saw it.
Re: violet-green swallow box. So far the alteration to our nestbox hole
has been successful this spring. The swallows must squeeze into the pill
capsule-shaped hole, and the English sparrows have not made themselves pests
at all -- a first. Lona Pierce, Warren, in Columbia County
