I had extended looks at a hummingbird at Sallys Bend this afternoon...it was
definitely not an Anna's....at first I thought it was a male Rufous but as the
light caught it in different ways, it didn't look right to be a Rufous (I see
these all the time)....its crown and back were definitely irridescent
green...with a large bright pinkish red throat patch. I've seen Rufous
Hummingbirds have a dull greenish tinge to their brown head and back but this
was really green...bright green. Anyway, this one just looked different from
what I've been seeing around here.
Could this possibly be an Allen's Hummingbird? One of my guides indicates they
are found in Curry and Coos Counties this time of year. I plan to go back soon
and take a closer look if anyone could give me more details on how to tell the
difference between a "greener" Rufous and an Allen's (definitely male).
Thanks,
Cindy Ashy
