I was out at the Gobbler's Knob site today from 10am till noon looking for
the Northern Parula and Veery. Dean Hale reported hearing the Parula (but
not seeing it) last evening and then seeing it this morning from below, but
the bird was not singing. I neither heard nor saw the Parula in the two
hours I was there. I did have a Red-eyed Vireo where Dean saw the Parula.
This area is marked by a pile of stacked rocks about 100 yards from the
gate. You will see where the main trail goes into the creek, and another
trail then goes up a slight hill to the right, heading towards "the swamp."
I did find a very cooperative Veery in the swamp. It was in the area where
a huge Ponderosa Pine fell across the trail and was cut on both sides to
allow traffic to continue on the trail. This is one of a handful of
Deschutes County records for Veery.
