This spring we had more migrating warbling vireos than in past years,
and for the first time we were lucky enough to observe them
bathing. We have a pond outside our dining room window, and a
quince bush on the far side of the pond. The Warbling Vireos would
take turns diving from about 4 feet above the water surface into the
pond, like a kingfisher, and quickly return to the quince bush. They
did this repeatedly for several minutes, and then spent several
additional minutes preening in the bush. At first I thought they
were getting bugs off the water surface, but that was not the case.
They were simply bathing in a manner that I have never observed
before. This sounds very similar to what Linda Fink observed with
the flycatcher.
