Myself and other members of the Craig Roberts Birding Group spent most of the day yesterday (06-18-07) birding Baskett Slough & Ankenny. We started at Baskett Slough hoping for the buntings and was rewarded with a "very" brief look at one and we were never able to relocate it at that time. We decided to bird other areas of Baskett Slough and then traveled down to Ankenny. On the way back home we made one more stop for the buntings in the late afternoon and got fanstastic looks at both the INDIGO and LAZULI BUNTINGS. They were in the exact area that everyone has been reporting seeing them. It was a beautiful sight indeed and the Indigo Bunting was a life bird for at least me.
Again, these birds were located by song first and were singing quite a bit. I would definately play or know their song if I was going to look for these wonderful birds. I am almost sure that we wouldn't have spotted them without them singing.
Highlights were:
Basket Slough: Indigo and Lazuli Buntings, Western Tanagers, Western Wood-Pewees, and a nesting House Wren.
Ankenny: Clark's Grebe, American Bittern, Spotted Sandpiper, and breeding plumage Ruddy Ducks.
