Charlotte -
Whooping Cranes would be highly unlikely to show up at Hart Mountain. There
have been several reports of them in the past, and each of these reports
turned out to be a misidentification. The population is so small and they
are monitored so closely that a bird or birds coming out this far afield
would make national news. There no longer is a Rocky Mountain population.
The last of those birds died off in 2002. For a bird to show up at Hart
Mountain, it would have to veer west about 1500 miles beyond its normal
migration corridor against prevailing winds. It's just not going to happen.
As far as I know the only "credible" sightings of Whoopers in Oregon are
those poor people who suffered through the movie "Even Cowgirls Get the
Blues." [For those who never saw the movie, the plot involves people near
Smith Rocks planting peyote to keep the Whooping Cranes around all year].
There also are singing Cactus Wrens in the movie around Smith Rocks, birds
which have somehow escaped me on my trips there.

Hi all,
I have had some e-mails that indicate that Whooping Cranes might have
been seen near the eastern entrance of the Hart Mountain Refuge. One
sighting was for June 13 and the other didn't have a date of the sighting. I
hope there is someone who might be able to shed some light on this. I still
have the e-mails if that will be of help. It does sound sound like they were
there.
