Hi birders,
A WHIP-POOR-WILL has been present in Willow Creek, Humboldt County.
The bird has been present in Willow Creek for almost (or about) a month!
This lady that is hosting the bird at and around her residence didn't know
what it was, looked it up on the internet, found the vocalizations and
decided that Whip-poor-will was probably what the bird was. The bird, a
male, has been singing every night from 9:00 p.m. to about 5:00 a.m. in the
morning, which starting to make the landowners hosting the bird wonder when
it's going to leave. She figured that she should maybe contact somebody in
the bird world and tell them about it. The bird has been confirmed and some
limited access has been granted to some local birders.
This message, though, is to help facilitate people to HEAR THE BIRD only.
So, WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO TO AT LEAST HEAR THIS BIRD? Drive east on Highway
299. Go past Willow Creek a couple of miles. After the tan with green trim
building that you'll see on your right (Bigfoot hardware or
lumber--something like that) look for Enchanted Springs Lane, 2 streets to
the east of this distinct building. You'll see a church on the south of 299,
just before (the southwest corner of ) the intersection. You can hear the
bird from the church. You might be able to hear it a little better by
walking up the road to the intersection with Enchanted Lane but it can
definitely be heard from the church rather readily. Just note that much of
the area here is private property so BE VERY MINDFUL OF THE LOCAL RESIDENTS
and don't walk down any road or driveway that you're not sure is private or
public.
Once again, sorry about not informing the general public at once about this
extremely cool and interesting record once confirmed, but the issue of
private property and respect for the residents of this area had to be worked
out and eased up. I think it's to a point where there would be no problem
for people to at least hear the bird from the main road so GO TO IT!!!
Obviously, this is Humboldt County's first record for Whip-poor-will and is
the northernmost record for the state and, maybe, even the west coast(?).
