Greetings!

The piece produced by OPB & aired on Jim Lehrer News Hour 06/28/07 was very informative.

There is yet an unmentioned part of the management plans of the eagles' habitat: Identification & preservation of their usage trees in conjunction with the protection of their nest trees. The latter are protected for a period of up to 5 consecutive years of non-use.

The "usage trees" are totally ignored. Each nesting pair has up to a half-dozen trees which they use for specific or mixed purposes. Some are exclusively "sentinel" trees, others are "resting or loafing" perches, & still others are used exclusively for hunting from. Still another total category is their "night roost" which can be further away & exceedingly difficult to identify.

These assorted categories of trees may be as near as 50m from a nest, others may be as far away as 1km or even further. As the now-legal encroachment zone has shrunk, so will almost surely the eagles' prosperity.
