Hello Oboloids,
I was treated this afternoon, in fact less then an hour ago, to seeing at quite close range (less then 20 feet) a female BLACK THROATED GREY WARBLER who initially attracted my attention with quite a lot of buzzing and wheezy sorts of noises. My investigation of what I hoped to be fledgling warblers turned out instead to be a fledgling BROWN HEADED COWBIRD. Much disappointed, and half wishing for the shotgun (not that I would actually use it on a BHC, no matter how I dislike them) I sat down and watched for about half an hour while she busily came and went, stuffing all sorts of caterpillars, craneflies and mashed insects down the little gluttons neck.
Serving as a distraction, still in the avian theme, was a large female RED TAILED HAWK that hung in the sky riding the wind, very nicely back-lit so that I could see the lovely orange tail fanned out. She went into a nice shallow, leisurely stoop that ended below the tree-line out of sight, but not out of the sight of the CROWS and TURKEYS who were raising all sorts of noise because of her. The CROWS eventually succeeded in chasing her away from what ever she was on. I did not go and see, being more interested in watching the interactions of this pair of songbirds in the little cottonwood next to me.
all the best
Andrew
