miles before Thompson Reservoir, 11 miles southwest of Silverlake, take road
4-11 (aka 27). In the immediate area where you turn off the highway for
Alder Spring there were a total of 9 LEWIS' WOODPECKERS. We sat and ate
lunch and saw 25 species of birds coming into Alder Spring, it is one of the
birdiest places I have ever seen. I had been there earlier, on Tuesday
morning, and recorded 39 species from dawn until about 10 AM. Too bad they
let cows in. It is a small number, maybe a dozen that I could see, but they
can totally trash the hundred yard of stream that comes out of the
enclosured spring before it dries up.

We had a great time and saw close to 150 species in the 3 days the group was
there.
