onmouth for the wintering swans. We found 3 TRUMPETER SWANS, thanks to the =
tip from Carol and Paul. Across the road, I seemed to have heard a snipe wi=
nnowing (which would seem to be well early and out of location). Something =
just didn't sound quiet right, so I suspect that the resident starlings hav=
e now picked up that sound as well.

Back at Ankeny NWR, we were successful in refinding at least one of the SWA=
MP SPARROWS from last weekend. This was the bird with more streaking on the=
sides. We had unobstructed views for about 10 minutes! The bird was feedin=
g at the water's edge of a small slough still within the woods by the shelt=
er at the end of the trail (this is between the boardwalk and dike). Listen=
for its diagnostic chip note. This was at the Egret and Pintail Ponds boar=
dwalk about 1/4mi east of the intersection Wintel & Marlatt Rd on the north=
side of Wintel (not the longer boardwalk on the south side). At the same s=
pot we also had a BLACK PHOEBE, an AMERICAN BITTERN and heard an incessantl=
y calling RED-SHOULDERED HAWK.

T'was a good day.

Mike Marsh and I tried our luck at E. E. Wilson WA this morning in hope of =
refinding the large sparrow flock from about a month ago that had all the r=
arities in it. Well, we didn't. In fact, there were only few 20+ bird flock=
s to be found. Highlight was probably a NORTHERN SHRIKE&nbsp;just north of =
the multi-flora&nbsp;area that the Sedge Wren had been seen around. Other t=
han a Hutton's Vireo, a slate-colored Junco, a Great Horned Owl on a nest, =
and a few singing Wrentits there is nothing to report really.<BR>
