onmouth for the wintering swans. We found 3 TRUMPETER SWANS, thanks to the =
tip from Carol and Paul. Across the road, I seemed to have heard a snipe wi=
nnowing (which would seem to be well early and out of location). Something =
just didn't sound quiet right, so I suspect that the resident starlings&nbs=
p;have now picked up that sound as well.
Back at Ankeny NWR, we were successful in refinding at least one of the SWA=
MP SPARROWS from last weekend. This was the bird with more streaking on the=
sides. We had unobstructed views for about 10 minutes! The bird was f=
eeding at the water's edge of a small slough still within the woods by the =
shelter at the end of the trail (this is between the boardwalk and dike). L=
isten for its diagnostic chip note. This was at the Egret and Pintail Ponds=
boardwalk about 1/4mi east of the intersection Wintel & Marlatt Rd on =
the north side of Wintel (not the longer boardwalk on the south side).=
At the same spot we also had a BLACK PHOEBE, an AMERICAN BITTERN and heard=
an incessantly calling RED-SHOULDERED HAWK.
T'was a good day.
