Regarding the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher that I sighted along Highway 97 =
at the junction of NW Wimp Way (open with trees and rock outcroppings).
So... at approximately 9:30am on Monday, March 10, 2008, I was driving =
north on Hwy 97. I saw a bird fly very low over the road in front of my =
car from West to East (left to right). It caught my attention =
immediately. I noticed the very long thin dark tail and small body with =
light colored head, breast and stomach. It also had the optical illusion =
of the body moving upward as the wings beat downward. =20
I drove back and turned around again to park on the right (east side) =
shoulder to look in the field by the homestead that it flew in the =
direction of (house, barn, etc. across from NW Wimp Way). I spotted it =
rapidly flapping and hovering above the open grassy field. I got out of =
my car with my binoculars and zoom camera and walked down to the fence =
along the field. I watched it for a while and at one point it banked to =
its left and I distinctly saw the pinkish color of his sides and =
underwing. The bird continued his hovering and flapping while slowly =
moving south and east - away from me and I continued to walk south to =
keep him in my sight. For a while he was behind the home and barn, but =
then came back north again before disappearing away to the southeast. =
Most of the time he was in front of the sun that was shining through the =
clouds and so it was often difficult to see more than his silhouette. He =
did rest for a brief moment on a fence post out in the field by the barn =
and I could see how long his tail was compared to his body and the light =
grayish color of his head. I was able to get a couple of pictures with =
my camera of him flying, but because it was mostly into the sun, I =
believe the pictures will only show a silhouette. I am having the =
pictures developed onto a CD and will have it tomorrow. I never saw the =
"scissor" tail spread out in the V tail shape.
I also saw several Black-billed Magpies flying and sitting around the =
home and barn as well. Let me know if you'd like more information or =
have questions.
Happy birding!
