OK, the gonydeal angle is a bit severe, as is the hooded appearance, even for a Slaty-backed. I am anxious to hear the opinions of those with more gull experience. 

I do think Greg has an excellent idea in referring to this bird as John Rakestraw's Gull. If this bird is going to raise my hopes so, and then cause me such grief, it should at least be named after me. I am proud to introduce Larus whattheheckisthaticus.

There is a good opportunity for teaching, here, so I hope John doesn't mind 
if I post the photos anyway. How would a Slaty-backed look different? What 
are the tell-tale marks for identifying this gull?
